In Solidarity with Peace Efforts in South Sudan

Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) is deeply troubled and concerned by recent developments in South Sudan, which threaten to further destabilize the already fragile political equilibrium.

The current crisis arose from President Salva Kiir Mayardit reportedly suspecting the First Vice-President Riek Machar of inciting unrest, prompting his subsequent house arrest. The incident underscores the rising tension between these two leaders, who previously headed opposing factions in South Sudan’s devastating civil war between 2013 and 2020, which resulted in approximately 400,000 deaths.

Following these events and the ensuing violence, PGA strongly urges the Government of South Sudan and all stakeholders to swiftly find solutions to resolve this critical impasse and restore political stability. PGA is particularly committed to engaging with countries where our organization has an active and effective parliamentary presence, making South Sudan an area of special focus and concern.

We commend the significant efforts of African Union mediators and other actors in their attempts to prevent further deterioration of the alarming and volatile situation.

PGA, together with our extensive member network, stands in solidarity with the people of South Sudan and reaffirms our commitment to supporting peace, stability, and respect for human rights.
