About Us - Who’s Who

PGA operates under the political direction of the Executive Committee and the International Council. The Executive Committee meets twice a year to decide on PGA's future programme activities.

PGA operates under the political direction of the Executive Committee and the International Council. The Executive Committee meets twice a year to decide on PGA's future programme activities. The International Council meets once a year during the Annual Forum to review programme work and to elect members to the Committee and Council. Members of the Comittee are elected on a 40:60 gender ratio.

The Council represents all regions of the world and each country where PGA has members can be represented with no more than two members. All elected members of the Committee and the Council serve for two years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.


President

Dip. Minou Tavárez Mirabal, Dominican Republic

Dip. Tavárez Mirabal is a linguist and independent politician in the Dominican Republic. She was first elected to parliament in 2002. She has served as Deputy Foreign Minister and is the former President of the Foreign Relations Committee in the Chamber of Deputies.

 

Treasurer

Ms. Petra Bayr, MP, Austria

Ms. Bayr is an Austrian politician (SPÖ) and Delegate of the Austrian National Council since 2002. She serves as Chairwoman of the Development Policy Subcommittee and a founding member of the Austrian platform against female genital mutilation.

 

Chair, International Council

Hon. Dr. Pindi Chana, MP, Tanzania

Hon. Dr. Chana is a Tanzanian lawyer and politician for Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).  She is the former Deputy Minister of Community Development, Gender and Children of the United Republic of Tanzania.  Dr. Chana has been a Member of Parliament since 2010.

Sen. Alain Destexhe, Belgium

Sen. Destexhe is a member of the liberal Reformist Movement. He represented Belgium in the World Economic Forum, served as Secretary-General of Médecins Sans Frontières from 1991-1995, President of the International Crisis Group from 1997-1999, and President of Parliamentarians for Global Action from 2006 -2007.  In 2016, Senator Destexhe was elected Chairperson of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE)

Ms. Barbara Lochbihler, MEP, European Parliament

Ms. Lochbihler is foreign affairs and human rights spokeswoman for Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance in the European Parliament. She served as Secretary General of the German section of Amnesty International from 1999-2009. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights.

She is currently Deputy Chair of OSCE, Member of Committee on Foreign Affairs and Alternate Member of Committee on European Affairs. She has been a member of the Swedish parliament since 1999.
