Virtual roundtable for parliamentarians in the Americas on the abolition of the death penalty

Description: While a majority of States in the Americas have abolished capital punishment, a minority retains the death penalty, often as a legacy of the colonial era. The abolition process has stalled for years, and this crucial human rights issue faces complex and varied realities from one country to another. The theme of the 2026 World Day Against the Death Penalty (10 October), “Stories for Life,” offers an opportunity for parliamentarians to get involved and shift the narrative toward justice. By gathering parliamentarians from countries facing different realities, this roundtable will foster a shared understanding of challenges, and equip participants with concrete strategies at national and international levels to engage with their governments and their constituents, with a view to advancing national reform efforts and promoting human rights for current and future generations.
