Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) Malaysia will work towards the abolition of the death penalty with support from the opposition.

In a statement released today, PGA's Malaysian chapter's newly-appointed chairman, Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran, said Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz will assist in getting members of the opposition to support ending the death penalty.

"Nazri reiterated his stand for the abolition of the death penalty in Malaysia and urged us all to fiercely support it.

"He further said he will get the opposition to support the abolition of the death penalty," Kulasegaran said, adding that Nazri reiterated that the abolition bill must be debated and approved if possible in the current parliamentary sitting.

Kulasegaran said PGA Malaysia will hold a two-day seminar on the death penalty on Oct 30 and 31, which will feature lawmakers from other countries in the region and in addition, de facto law minister Datuk Liew Vui Keong and Dewan Rakyat speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof will both speak at the event.

PGA, a non-profit, non-partisan international network of committed legislators, informs and mobilises parliamentarians in all regions of the world to advocate for human rights and the rule of law, democracy, human security, non-discrimination, and gender equality.

The PGA Malaysia organising committee also consists of Batang Sadong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri (deputy chairman), Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto (secretary), Parit Sulong MP Datuk Noraini Ahmad (treasurer) with committee members Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (Masjid Tanah MP), Dr Hasan Bahrom (Tampin MP), Ahmad Amzan Hashim (Kuala Terengannu MP), Noor Amin Ahmad (Kangar MP) and P. Prabakaran (Batu MP).
