Carr Center fellow Federica D'Alessandra was a moderator and Co-Vice Chair of the IBA War Crimes Committee at the International Bar Association’s Conference on International Criminal Law, January 31, 2014 in Den Haag, NL. (together with Gregory Kehoe, Chief American Investigator for the Saddam Hussein trial).

Co-Chairs of the Conference were HLS Professor of Practice Alex Whiting, and Queens’ Counsel (and Defense Counsel of President Kenyatta before the International Criminal Court) Steven Kay.

D'Alessandra sat on a panel with former Russia Prime Minister Mr. Mikhail Kasyanov, former ICTY prosecutor Dan Saxon, Parliamentarians for Global Action Secretary General David Donat Cattin, and former Moscow correspondent for the WSJ David Satter.

The panel discussed the annexation and aggression and the effectiveness of international law/international criminal law in these situations. Discussion included:

  • The background to the conflict
  • The crimes committed
  • The investigation of those crimes
  • Responsibility for the crimes
  • Routes to resolution of the issues
