On 14 August 2018, the Government of Brazil deposited its Instrument of Ratification of the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) with the United Nations Secretary-General in New York, thereby becoming the 97th State Party to the ATT.

On this historic occasion, it is essential to recognize the leadership efforts of Brazilian Members of PGA in ensuring that ratification was duly and timely approved by both Houses of the Brazilian Parliament, in particular Sen. Ana Amélia Lemos, Dep. Jean Wyllys and Dep. Aluísio Mendes. Over the past 4 years, these Lawmakers have undertaken significant efforts and initiatives leading, in turn, to parliamentary approval of ATT ratification in the Chamber of Deputies and, subsequently, the Senate of Brazil - in late 2017 and early 2018, respectively. This parliamentary process has fulfilled mandatory constitutional requirements that allowed the Executive Branch of Government to proceed with the signature and deposit of the Decree of Ratification and relevant Instrument.
The PGA Secretariat will continue to work in a collaborative manner with the multi-party PGA Brazil National Group in order to advance the objective of full implementation of the ATT in the domestic legal order and effective cooperation with the efforts of the International Community to give full effect to the UN Program of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons, including through an important Workshop for Lusophone States to be held in Guinea Bissau.
