PGA’s vision is to contribute to the creation of a Rules-Based International Order for a more equitable, safe, sustainable and democratic world.

Tanzania and the Death Penalty

Tanzania is de facto abolitionist, having carried out its last execution in 1994. However, at least 4 individuals were still sentenced to death in 2018 in the country, while more than 500 people remained on death row.

While Tanzania has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in 1976, it has yet to ratify its Second Optional Protocol aiming at the abolition of the death penalty (ICCPR-OP2).

26 February – 1 March 2019: Honourable Jasson Rweikiza, Member of the Tanzanian Parliament, Chairman of PGA’s National Group, attended the 7th World Congress against the Death Penalty, organized by Ensemble contre la peine de mort in Brussels (Belgium).

4 March 2016: During PGA's Round-Table and consultations on the Abolition of the Death Penalty with Ghanaian, Tanzanian and Zimbabwean Parliamentarians, hosted by the Parliament of Ghana in Accra, MPs from all parties and relevant actors were sensitized to the abolition of the death penalty.

3-4 May 2015: PGA organized a Roundtable meeting on the abolition of the death penalty in Tanzania and Uganda in Dar es Salaam, during which MPs from all parties and relevant actors have been sensitized on the abolition of the death penalty, and several MPs have committed to introducing a private members bill to abolish the death penalty.
