PGA’s vision is to contribute to the creation of a Rules-Based International Order for a more equitable, safe, sustainable and democratic world.

Morocco and the Death Penalty

Morocco is a de facto abolitionist country, having not carried out any execution since 1993. However, the country did give out death sentences against at least 10 individuals in 2018 and more than 93 were still on death row.

With help from PGA, a network of parliamentarians against the death penalty has been well established in Morocco. While Morocco has ratified the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in 1979, it has yet to ratify its Second Optional Protocol aiming at the abolition of the death penalty (ICCPR-OP2).

26 February – 1 March 2019: Honourable Zohour el Wahabi, Member of the House of Representatives of Morocco, member of the Justice, Legislation and Human Rights Committee, PGA Member, attended the 7th World Congress against the Death Penalty, organized by Ensemble contre la peine de mort in Brussels (Belgium).

4-5 December 2014:  PGA hosted a reception on the eve of PGA’s 36th Annual Forum held in Rabat (Morocco) to launch a resource aimed at supporting the work of parliamentarians towards abolition of the death penalty in their country and worldwide in partnership with Ensemble contre la Peine de Mort (ECPM) and the World Coalition against the death penalty.
