PGA Statement on the Recent Volcanic Eruption and Tsunami in Tonga

PGA wishes to express its deep shock and sadness in connection with the recent volcanic eruption and tsunami that have devastated Tonga.

We send out, also herewith, our expression of solidarity with Hon. Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Tonga, Lord Fatafehi Fakafanua, as well as the other Members of the Legislative Assembly and all the people of Tonga.

We urge PGA Membership in all States, in particular in the wider Asia Pacific region, to reflect on possible similar statements that they may wish to issue as well as to identify possible means of logistical support that they could encourage respective Government authorities to advance to offset the widespread damage that has taken place in Tonga.

In this connection, PGA observes, with appreciation, the prompt initial steps taken by the Governments of Australia and New Zealand to assess damage and immediate allocation of required resources.

PGA fondly recalls its extensive prior engagement with PGA Membership and civil society partners in Tonga and stands ready to mobilize any further political will that might help to galvanize assistance with respect to this terrible natural, national tragedy.
