High-Level Seminar for Fostering Cooperation with the Court in the Caribbean Community region

At the margins of the International Criminal Court's High-Level Seminar for Fostering Cooperation with the Court in the Caribbean Community (“CARICOM”) region held in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), on 11-12 January 2017, PGA's Secretary General Dr. David Donat Cattin met with the President of the Republic of T&T Mr. Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona.

They discussed the role of Trinidad & Tobago in the process that led to the adoption and ratification of the Rome Statute of the ICC thanks to the historic leadership role of former PGA Board Member and former Prime Minister and President of T&T Mr. ANR Robinson, who passed away in April 2014. The meetings served also to introduce to the President of the Republic all Programs and Campaigns of PGA, and the events held in Port of Spain to foster the principle of non-discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and to promote the consideration of abolition of the death penalty.

Dr. Donat Cattin addressed the ICC Seminar as expert on universality of, and cooperation in accordance with, the Rome Statute. PGA's Secretary General called upon the 3 CARICOM States not yet Parties to the Rome Statute (Jamaica, Haiti and Bahamas) to ratify the Statute and offered the assistance of PGA to advance domestic implementation processes. In response to questions relating the relationship between African States and the ICC, he shared the outcomes of the Dakar session of the 9th CAP ICC organized by PGA on 9-10 December 2016.

One the Caribbean States was represented by a prominent PGA Member, Sen. Maureen Hyman-Payne from Antigua and Barbuda, who reaffirmed its country's commitment to the fight against impunity and highlighted the role that Parliamentarians can play in creating the necessary political will for full implementation and universality of the Rome Statute.

Government delegates from 17 countries and overseas territories, ICC officials and representatives of the CARICOM, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Organization of American States attended the Port of Spain event organized by the ICC with the funding support of the European Commission, European Union.

PGA's Secretary General also met with the Ambassador of the EU to Trinidad and Tobago.
