Overview
Parliamentarians for Global Action is a membership-based organization that mobilizes legislators from all parts of the world as champions for human rights, democracy, and a sustainable world.
Our network is governed by member parliamentarians who seek to promote democratic principles and ensure constitutional order. PGA members are current legislators from countries where the parliament has true legitimacy and authority or from countries undergoing a transition to democracy. As a member of PGA, legislators may freely decide to select, develop, and undertake an action or a campaign that PGA advances as part of our organizational mission.
At present, our network consists of approximately 1,000 legislators in 150 multi-party parliaments around the globe.
Membership in PGA is open to any member or alternate member of parliament (national, provincial or regional) following the above criteria, during their term.
Membership Eligibility
PGA membership is open to individual legislators from elected parliaments worldwide.
“Parliament" shall mean a parliament, assembly, congress or other term used to designate the central deliberative or legislative organ of a State or Group of States. In order for a group or individual to qualify for PGA membership, the parliament must adhere to all of the following criteria:
- The parliament should belong to an internationally recognized State or Group of States. The PGA’s Executive Committee adopts the policy of the United Nations for recognizing States as member States.
- The members must be from a freely elected parliament.
- The election should be open to more than one political party and/or to independent candidates. The parliament must evidence an actual ability to engage in free debate.
Membership in PGA is open to any member or alternate member of parliament (national, provincial or regional) following the above criteria, during their term.
PGA’s Executive Committee decides first whether a parliament meets the criteria for membership, and then it shall approve or reject applications for membership from individuals and groups from those parliaments.
