PGA commenced its expansion of the programme to Nigeria in February 2002. Mr. Niklas Enander was chosen as the JPO for Nigeria and commenced his work in Abuja in February 2002.
PGA Participation in UNFPA Steering Committee Meeting to plan International Parliamentarians Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, Ottawa, Canada, New York, April 6
At the Steering Committee Meeting, PGA was represented by U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, D-NY, and Honorable Theresa Tagoe, Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Ghana, and Convenor of PGA’s Sustainable Development and Population Programme.
PGA Delegation to meet members of the U.S. House and Senate, regarding U.S. releasing funds to UNFPA, sponsored by UNFPA and Population Action International, Washington, D.C., May 22
In March 2002, PGA’s Executive Board sent a letter to President Bush, urging him to release the $34 million appropriated by Congress and passed unanimously by Senate, to UNFPA. As a follow up activity, a delegation of four PGA members traveled to Washington, D.C, to meet with relevant members of the U.S. House and Senate, to discuss the importance of UNFPA worldwide, urging them to take action to demand the release of U.S. funds.

PGA commenced its expansion of the programme to Mali in June 2002. Ms. Ulrika Broback was chosen as the JPO for Mali and commenced her work in Bamako in June 2002.

The Parliamentary Workshop on Clean Air and Clean Water is a unique forum that will bring together Members of Parliament from over 100 countries with leading environmental experts, NGOs, and business leaders to highlight the success of legislation to reduce air and water pollution and illustrate the potential to implement similar acts internationally. The workshop provides an opportunity to share success stories and challenges, and serve as a launching point for strategic, legislative action.

PGA has been actively involved in the preparatory process for the upcoming International Parliamentarians Conference on the Implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, the goal which is to promote dialogue among the parliamentarians from all regions on the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action, with a view to achieving further commitment to collective action in the areas of resource mobilization and creation of an enabling environment for population and development.
