Implementing the ICPD Agenda: Workshop I," Accra, Ghana, December 4-5, 1997 [PLAN OF ACTION “accra PLANACT_1997.DOC”]
PGA advisor, Dr. Fred Sai assessed the role of the Ghanaian parliamentary committee on population and development and the current situation of population-related issues in West Africa. The Ghanaian committee on population and development developed a "plan of action" for the committee.
1998
Development of a Parliamentary Fellows Programme in conjunction with the Swedish Development Agency (SIDA)
In order to increase the capacity of the parliamentary committees on Population and Development in Ghana and Senegal and strengthen communication between PGA and the MPs, PGA has developed a Junior Professional Officer (JPO) program with the Swedish Development Agency. PGA placed two Swedish post-graduates to work as research and administrative officers for the Ghanaian and Senegalese committees on Population, filling an urgent need for staff assistance in the work of the parliamentarians.
Delegations to U.S. Representatives
During the spring of 1998, PGA staff laid the groundwork for two parliamentary delegations to U.S. Representatives through visits and telephone calls with the Legislative Directors and Chiefs of Staff of the members. The goal of these visits was to encourage understanding of international issues in their constituents.
The Dakar Planning Session: Leaders Consult NGOs, Ministries and UN Agencies National Assembly of Senegal in Dakar, Senegal, September 1998
PGA organized the “Dakar Planning Session” on September 11-12, 1998, in Dakar, Senegal. The meeting convened the key members of the Ghanaian and Senegalese parliamentary committees on population together with 22 West African experts, NGO leaders and ministry officials.
1999
The International Forum of Parliamentarians (IFP) (February 4-6, 1999) and The NGO Forum on the ICPD +5 Review of The Hague (February 6-7, 1999)
PGA contributed to the organization of the IFP by acting as a member of the Steering Committee. PGA had a presence on the Steering Committee meetings in September 1998 (The Hague, The Netherlands) and December 1998 (Tokyo, Japan). The Parliamentary Forum took place simultaneously with the International Forum on “The ICPD +5” in The Hague in February 1999. PGA sent a ten-person delegation to The Hague Forum.
Workshop, "Implementing the ICPD Agenda" Five Years After Cairo: Where are we now? Dakar, Senegal, April 1999
In order to bring together the Senegalese and Ghanaian parliamentary committees on population and development and develop an appropriate course of action, PGA and the Parliament of Senegal organized the 2nd Annual "Implementing the ICPD Agenda" on the theme Five Years After Cairo: Where are we now? The workshop, which consisted of 80 participants, including 32 parliament members representing five different countries, was hosted by the Parliament of Senegal in Dakar, Senegal on April 19th, 20th and 21st 1999.
2000
A PGA delegation visits the United States Congress, Washington, D.C., June 12-13 2000
On June 12-13, 2000 as a means of strengthening PGA’s Women in Power Network, Parliamentarians for Global Action organized a parliamentary delegation to meet with members of the United States Congress to discuss the Network and to encourage members of the U.S. Congress to actively participate in PGA’s work.

PGA’s 3rd annual Conference on Implementing the ICPD Agenda in the New Millennium was held in Accra, Ghana, May 15-17, 2000. The conference was hosted by the Parliament of Ghana and gave Francophone and Anglophone West African MPs, non-governmental organizations, and government ministries the opportunity to exchange information and learn from their colleagues about each other’s work in implementing the ICPD Programme of Action.
Bamako Workshop – Bamako, Mali, November 3-5, 2000 [BAMAKO REPORT ATTACHED IN PDF FORMAT]
On November 3-5th a workshop was held in Bamako, Mali for parliamentarians and NGO leaders from Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali Guinea to review, analyze and discuss the Sexual and Reproductive Health Model Law that was developed in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in June 1999. The workshop provided an occasion for legislators and civil society leaders to discuss the feasibility of adapting the model law to the situation in each of their countries.
2001
Completion of 3-year West Africa Pilot Project in Ghana and Senegal Parliaments (Accra, Ghana & Dakar, Senegal)
PGA Congressional Briefing and Press Conference on Food Security, hosted by Rep. Dennis Kucinich Washington, D.C., June 12
PGA co-hosted a briefing on food security with PGA member Rep. Dennis Kucinich (United States). PGA brought a delegation of thirteen PGA members to participate in the event. The MPs participated in the day’s events and were able to share their views on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs).
Nigerian Delegation to Ghana – Accra, Ghana, November 4-10, 2001
PGA’s Ghanaian National Group hosted a delegation of Nigerian MPs and population NGO representatives for one week in Ghana. The goal of the Nigerian mission to Ghana was to explore how the programme could be replicated in Nigeria in early 2002.
Needs Assessment Mission – Bamako, Mali, November 10-16, 2001 [report attached]
A PGA delegation was hosted in Mali by 3rd Vice President of the National Assembly and PGA Interim President, Deputé Oumou Ba Sangaré and President of the Finance Commission and of PGA’s National Group, Deputé Lahaou Touré. The delegation traveled to Mali to conduct a needs assessment mission, to explore how the JPO programme could be replicated in Nigeria in early 2002.
