PGAs Daily International Justice Updates Praised by PGA members as an invaluable tool for their own initiatives, the IJU is a compilation that collates information on developments pertaining to international justice issues in numerous different countries and regions worldwide. The IJU, posted on the PGA website on a daily basis where it attracts considerable attention/ 'internet traffic', enables PGA Members and other users to stay fully informed and up to date in connection with ongoing developments on international justice issues around the world. The IJU also assists in the planning of the PGA ICC Campaign, serving as a tracking and monitoring tool of key developments in target countries, which in turn impacts on the strategic planning, and internal monitoring of the Programme.
Strategic documents: Paper on the Role of the ICC and Deterrence of Crimes English French This Paper prepared by the PGA International Law Programme provides an in-depth overview of the importance of the ICC as a deterrent/preventative force, in addition to its repressive force in investigating and, as appropriate, prosecuting international crimes of serious concern. Frequently overlooked, the mere threat of ICC intervention may ultimately prove to be its most potent tool. The ICC has a key role to play, not only in ending impunity for serious human rights abuses, but in also, and critically, just by its presence, in preventing such crimes from occurring in the first place. The Paper was subsequently published in a compendium of other papers in 'Genocide - Opposing Viewpoints' : Elizabeth Des Chesnes and Christine Nasso (Editors) (July 2007).
Memorandum on the US positions on the International Criminal Court: An Evolution from Active to Restrained Opposition [updated 1 May 2008] Based on recent development and information provided by PGA members and partners, this memorandum, prepared by the PGA International Law Programme, provides an overview of the evolution of the position of the United States on the International Criminal Court, highlighting the practice and legislative initiatives related to unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the US on countries that join the ICC but refuse to sign a bilateral non-surrender agreement. The paper points out to a reduced opposition in light of recent policy allowing for waivers and exceptions for those sanctions.
